The San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge is a major road link between San Francisco and Oakland.

The current base toll is $7, charged in the westbound direction. Toll goes up during rush hours to $7. Carpool vehicles with 3 or more persons can cross the bridge for $3.50 on weekdays between 5am - 10am and 3pm - 7pm. FasTrak is accepted for payment. Drivers who don't have FasTrak transponder can drive through the toll gate, and an invoice would be sent to the vehicle owner by mail for the toll. Drivers who don't use FasTrak and regularly cross the bridge would have tolls be invoiced monthly. The invoice can be paid online, by mail, or by cash at select locations.

A $0.50 discount is given for FasTrak users making a second toll crossing of the day during weekday commute hours (5-10am and 3-7pm).

Bikes and pedestrians

The West span of bridge is closed to pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The East span has a bike/ped path that link with Yerba Buena Island from Oakland.

Transit links are available for pedestrians and bicyclists to travel across the Bay. In addition, Caltrans Bay Bridge Bicycle Shuttle carries bicyclists and their bikes over the Bay Bridge during weekday commute hours.

On weekends and holidays, shuttle is available from the path landing on Yerba Buena Island to Treasure Island, where riders can continue to San Francisco on Muni.

Casual carpooling

Unlike regular carpools, casual carpools are done without prior arrangements. Commuters looking for rides go to one of many pick up spots waiting for drivers picking them up. There are many pick up spots in the East Bay. There's also a designated pick up spot at the Transbay Terminal in San Francisco.

Drivers pick up riders so they can gain access to carpool lanes and pay a lower bridge toll from the East Bay(used to be free). There's no consensus as to whether riders should pay the drivers to cover the bridge toll. Some drivers accept money and others do not.
