Onboard

Bart bikes.jpg

Except for selected trains during weekday rush hours, bicycles can be carried onboard BART with no extra charge. Trains that bicycles can't board are highlighted on BART train schedules and trip planner. In addition, bikes are not allowed on any crowded car.

Train schedules

At the stations, BART regulations prohibit bicycles on escalators. Bicyclists will have to either carry the bicycle on the stairs or use the elevators. Also, bike riding is not allowed at the station or on the platforms.

When going through the fare gates, use wide fare gates if available. Otherwise, process your ticket first at a regular gate and then use the side manual swing gate to retrieve your bike on the other side of the fare gates.

Bikes are permitted on any car except the first car of the train. There are no bike racks on BART trains. Rider must park the bicycle in a open area near the door and hold the bike while the train is in motion. On some cars, these areas have been designated for bicycles. Bicyclists must yield priority seats to seniors and people with disabilities.

Bicyclists under the age of 14 need to be accompanied by an adult.

Downtown Oakland stations

Although bikes are permitted on all trains on the Richmond - Fremont line, as well as on other reserve commute trains, bikes are not allowed at Oakland City Center/12th Street Station and 19th Street/Oakland Station during weekday rush hours. Use Lake Merritt Station instead.

Folding bicycles

Folding bicycles are permitted on any train. During commute hours, the bike must be folded before passing through the gates at stations in Downtown SF and Downtown Oakland. At all other stations, the bike can be folded at the platform before boarding the train.
