Bicycles can be taken aboard Caltrain at all hours on all trains, with no additional fare, but only on the designated bike car where bike racks have been installed.
+
How to take Caltrain
 +
Before boarding the trains, buy your train ticket from a Caltrain ticket machine, or tap your Clipper Card.  You can also pay fare by setting up Clipper on your phone with Apple Pay or Google Pay, and skip the ticket machines, and instead tap the Clipper reader. Fares on Caltrain are determined by the number of fares zone you plan to travel. Caltrain uses the proof of payment system and passengers caught without a valid ticket or pass are subject to eviction and/or citation.

The bike car is always the northernmost car of the train. Southbound it will be last car, and northbound the first.
+
Make sure to look at the train schedule for the departure times and station stops. During the weekday peak hours, all trains will skip some station stops, even the more popular ones like Palo Alto and Millbrae. If you are not sure if a particular train makes your stop (like when trains are delayed), ask the conductor at the station. Trips between minor stops during peak hours may require a transfer. Every trip on the train schedule has a train number (like flight number). Train numbers are used by the train crews and displayed on the digital message boards installed at most stations.

Bike capacity is limited to 16 bikes on the newer, Bombardier train cars (which have a split level design and two-doors per car) and 32 bikes on Gallery cars (which have a single door in the center of the car).
+
Caltrain has one of the most generous onboard bicycle policies in the country. See Caltrain bicycle access for details.

Rules & Etiquette
+
Free shuttles are available at many suburban Caltrain stations to nearby employers.

* Bikes must be strapped to the bike racks with the provided bungee cords, with no more than 4 bikes per rack. Some conductors will bend this a bit because the rule is for safety and often 5 can be stored without blocking the isles.
+
If you ride with your Clipper, you'll need to tap on a Clipper reader again after exiting the train, so that proper fare will be charged.

* Place a tag on your bike identifying the stations you travel between. Caltrain provides vinyl bike tags which can be picked up stations with staffed information counters and often from conductors on board the train.
+
Disabled access
 +
Caltrain is accessible to people with disabilities at all stations except 22nd Street, South San Francisco, Broadway, Atherton, Stanford, and College Park stations. Riders who are unable to use stairs can board the train by waiting on the blue boarding assistance square painted on the platform (generally located near the middle-north end of the platform). Conductors will deploy the wheelchair lift.

* Stack bikes in the order they will be removed. When you secure your bike, check the tags of other bikes, placing your bike only in front of other which will be getting off after you.
+
Some stations have a mini-high platform located adjacent to the blue square. The platform provides level boarding onto low floor Bombardier trains. To board those trains, conductors will deploy a ramp to bridge the gap between the vehicle and the mini-high platform.

* Let pedestrians board and exit the train before bikes.
+

* Do not lock your bike. Use of bike locks is prohibited on board Caltrain.

Fares
Caltrain Fares are determined by the number of zones you are traveling.

There are 4 types of tickets:

# One-Way Ticket - Valid for 4 hours after purchase within the zones and in the direction indicated.

# Day Pass - Valid for unlimited rides on the day of purchase between the zones indicated.

# 10-Ride Ticket - Good for 60 days from the day and time purchased, but must be validated each time (using the validators at every station) before boarding the train.  Each time your ticket is validated, travel is good in any direction between the zones and time indicated.  A  10-Ride Ticket may also be used for multiple riders, but must be stamped for every rider on every trip.

# Monthly Pass - Valid for unlimited travel between the zones indicated during the month.  On weekends and major holidays, it is good for unlimited travel in all fare zones.

If you want travel to a station and your Ticket doesn't include that stations zone, purchase a Zone Upgrade, which must be used with a Valid Caltrain Ticket.  A zone upgarde allows you to to travel from a station from any of the zones indicated on your Caltrain Ticket to any station located in any of the zones that are within number of zones on your Zone Upgrade your station is loctated away from.  For example, if I have a Day Pass from Zone 3 to Zone 2, I'm in Palo Alto, but I want to go to San Jose,  I would purchase a 1-Zone Upgrade  which would allow me to Travel to San Jose in Zone 4 or San Francisco in Zone 1 for up to 4 hours.  Likewise, if I was in San Jose, with the Same ticket, and I wanted to go to San Francisco, I would purchase a 2-Zone Upgrade.

A  Monthly pass with at least 2-Zones* is also good for unlimed rides on SamTrans and VTA, including Light Rail, and local fare credit on Dumbarton Express and Highway 17 Express. If the validator isn't fuctioning, the Conductor will validte your ticket on board.

Caltrain is a proof of Payment System.  No tickets are sold on-board Caltrain.  Passengers must have a valid ticket, validated 10-Ride, or Monthly Pass prior to boarding the train, or they may recieve a ciatation of up to $250.  Tickets, 10 Rides, and Monthly Passes may be purchased at Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) at all stations or from the ticket office at the 4th&King and San Jose Diridon Stations.  Monthly Passes Can also be purchased from the Caltrain and Samtrans Office, on the 2nd Floor of 1250 San Carlos Avenue, San Carlos (1 block from the San Carlos Station) and the

Caltrain web site

Caltrain is a regional rail system serving Gilroy, San Jose, San Francisco, and cities in between. Caltrain connects with other rail systems in the region such as BART, Muni Metro, VTA Light Rail, ACE, and Amtrak, along with local bus systems like Muni, SamTrans, and VTA. Shuttles are also available at many stations to connect the train with nearby destinations.

Caltrain offers extensive limited stop service (including the Baby Bullet) during the weekday peak hours. Between San Francisco and San Jose, service is available throughout the day on weekdays and weekends. Limited service from Gilroy is provided on weekdays only.

How to take Caltrain

Before boarding the trains, buy your train ticket from a Caltrain ticket machine, or tap your Clipper Card. You can also pay fare by setting up Clipper on your phone with Apple Pay or Google Pay, and skip the ticket machines, and instead tap the Clipper reader. Fares on Caltrain are determined by the number of fares zone you plan to travel. Caltrain uses the proof of payment system and passengers caught without a valid ticket or pass are subject to eviction and/or citation.

Caltrain has one of the most generous onboard bicycle policies in the country. See Caltrain bicycle access for details.

Free shuttles are available at many suburban Caltrain stations to nearby employers.

If you ride with your Clipper, you'll need to tap on a Clipper reader again after exiting the train, so that proper fare will be charged.

Disabled access

Caltrain is accessible to people with disabilities at all stations except 22nd Street, South San Francisco, Broadway, Atherton, Stanford, and College Park stations. Riders who are unable to use stairs can board the train by waiting on the blue boarding assistance square painted on the platform (generally located near the middle-north end of the platform). Conductors will deploy the wheelchair lift.

Some stations have a mini-high platform located adjacent to the blue square. The platform provides level boarding onto low floor Bombardier trains. To board those trains, conductors will deploy a ramp to bridge the gap between the vehicle and the mini-high platform.

Disability information

Disabled parking is free at Caltrain stations.
